Today’s topics are Character Chatter and Blogging Q&A. I used to make seperate posts for seperate topics even if they for the same day, but my Blogging Q&A section is going to be really short so I’m just gonna squeeze it in here. If you want to straight to Blogging Q&A, just click on the link. 🙂
I love characters. I love it when they are the ones that are driving the story and not something else like romance. I like it when they show development and seem to mature as the book (or series) moves on. I love it when you can connect to them in anyway. But I don’t like flat and stereotypical characters. Or ones that are annoying and stupid.
Some of my favorite characters include Actually, that would be a stupid idea. We would be here forever if I were to list out all my favorite characters and I would be here forever if I was forced to just pick some. But I am willing to share some things I find all my favorite characters have in common.
I like strong female characters. That being said, like I mentioned above, I also like seeing development. Some people are all like “I like strong female characters because they show girls they can be too!”. And I’m not knocking all that, but to be honest, I hate it when characters, male or female, start off super strong – then there’s no where else for them to go. I like it when they’re weaker at the beginning because then there’s room for improvement and development. I like strong characters, but I also like seeing them… vulnerable.
I like it when characters have “vulnerable” moments. To me, this can help me relate to them – we can’t always be strong, so they shouldn’t be able to be either. And seeing characters suffer a setback or another obstacle and then overcoming it can be really inspiring. All of this makes them seem more real.
When talking about characters I hate, I feel like I need to differentiate between characters that deserve to be hated (they’re evil and did something horrible in the book) and characters that were just poorly written. On one hand, you have characters that are obviously the straight out villain, ones that you love to hate. And on the other are characters you are mean to like, but just cannot.
I have mixed feelings about character cliches. I like original content and ideas! But I feel like we have come to a point where they are unavoidable. They are there whether we want them to be and they are there to stay. I’m going to stop there, otherwise I’ll start ranting and I’m not in the mood to do that right now.
I don’t really have time to right my whole list of Blogging Q&A’s down here. But I have compiled some links to some posts I did… sort of. More like I compiled a list of lists…
