7 better than average dads in YA

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and Bookish.

This week we were assigned a Father’s Day Related Freebie and because I’m unoriginal and out of ideas, I decided to go with the “best” dads in “YA”. Which is fine and all, but I ran into a slight problem. I’ve been thinking about this post for the last few weeks and I could not, for the life of me, come up with ten great dads. ? But I did come up with 7! ? SO, in no particular order…

Arthur Weasley

From Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling.
Father of Bill, Charlie, Percy, Fred, George, Ron, and Ginny Weasley.

According to my library, Harry Potter is considered more juvenile than YA, but given some choice words in Deathly Hallows, I think HP fits right in. And what list of best dads would be complete about Arthur?

Atticus Finch

From To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Father of Jem and Scout Finch

Like Arthur Weasley, Atticus is just one of the dads you have to talk about when talking about the #1 Dads. They both taught their children important life lessons and were not afraid to go against the norm to do what they felt was right.

Denny Hall

From If I Stay by Gayle Forman
Father of Mia and Teddy Hall

Denny is honestly one of the most caring fathers in YA. It’s clear he and Mia had a special relationship. Plus, he gave up his music career for his kids and the wellbeing of this family. He’s one of the few dads that stuck with me.

Harry Stewart

From The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken
Stepfather of Cole and Liam Stewart

One of the ways to measure how well fathers are at being dads is to see how much their children care about them. And Liam definitely cares about his stepfather and Harry’s done a lot for his family.

Abe Mazur

From Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead
Father of Rose Hathaway

Abe might not be your conventional father, but he does what he can to help his kid and her cause and that’s what counts, right?

Bobby Bishop

From Heist Society by Ally Carter
Father of Katarina Bishop

Okay, so Bobby isn’t what I’d call the best dad, but I told you I was running out of options, didn’t I? To be fair, he’s much more caring and obviously loves Kat to bits. Which is more than I can say for a lot of the other dads in YA.

Joe Solomon

From the Gallagher Girls by Ally Carter
Pseudo-dad to Zach Goode and uncle? to Cammie Morgan

Joe’s fatherly duties are a bit… confusing. As the only real male figure in Zach’s childhood, Joe took on a father-figure-mentory role. And I think he fulfilled some similar gap in Cammie’s life as well as her missing father’s best friend. View Spoiler » I think he did a pretty decent job. View Spoiler »

Who would you have included on this list?
Am I missing anyone (I know I am).

    • Yay, I’m glad Joe made it on someone else’s list. I wasn’t sure if he counted since he’s not exactly your traditional “father”. 🙂

    • I agree! The way fathers are portrayed in books, especially YA makes them a bit less memorable than some other characters. I also feel like not a lot of books mention or include them. Arthur is definitely precious! 🙂

    • I think Arthur Weasley would have made a lot of lists. He’s one the best dads in fiction. 🙂 I’m glad I’m not the only one who had a hard time!

  1. It’s been so long since someone mentioned Vampire Academy. Abe is a different sort of dad but definitely awesome! I think it’s time for me to reread those books; it’s been awhile. Mr. Weasley is a great dad too! Great list! Happy reading!

    Here’s my Top Ten Tuesday!

    • Abe’s not fatherly but it’s clear he’ll do anything to protect Rose. I really need to reread the series too. Hopefully, then I can finally finish the Bloodlines series. ?

  2. Yes, I completely agree with all of these! 🙂 Arthur Weasley and Atticus Finch are both such great fathers so I’m so glad to see them in your post. Thanks for sharing and, as always, fabulous choices! <3

  3. Atticus Finch ad Arthur definitely deserved to be on this list because they’re so awesome. I loved the examples that you chose.

I’m new to blogging and book reviewing, and I was wondering if you had any tips for newbie bloggers and book reviewers.
