So naturally, this week, I decided to post a review of UNCOMMON CRIMINALS.
TITLE: UNCOMMON CRIMINALS
SYNOPSIS: Katarina Bishop has worn a lot of labels in her short life. Friend. Niece. Daughter. Thief. But for the last two months she’s simply been known as the girl who ran the crew that robbed the greatest museum in the world. That’s why Kat isn’t surprised when she’s asked to steal the infamous Cleopatra Emerald so it can be returned to its rightful owners.
There are only three problems. First, the gem hasn’t been seen in public in thirty years. Second, since the fall of the Egyptian empire and the suicide of Cleopatra, no one who holds the emerald keeps it for long, and in Kat’s world, history almost always repeats itself. But it’s the third problem that makes Kat’s crew the most nervous and that is simply… the emerald is cursed.
Kat might be in way over her head, but she’s not going down without a fight. After all she has her best friend—the gorgeous Hale—and the rest of her crew with her as they chase the Cleopatra around the globe, dodging curses, realizing that the same tricks and cons her family has used for centuries are useless this time.
Which means, this time, Katarina Bishop is making up her own rules.
In UNCOMMON CRIMINALS, Ally Carter takes us on another adventure with Kat and the crew. It was different from HEIST SOCIETY, but managed to continue the plot line of HEIST SOCIETY. It continued the mystery of what happened in HEIST, and adds on to it. I found myself continuously flipping the pages – I couldn’t stop. What made me like UNCOMMON CRIMINALS even more was the fact that throughout the book, I did not overly compare it to HEIST. That says a lot about the author and how well written the series is. Usually in a series, I always think about what the author should have written blah blah blah like the way he/she did in Book 1.
In UNCOMMON CRIMINALS, we also get to see some of the characters grow. They continue to develop relationships between them, bonding the crew together. The reader gets to see whether the crew completely backs Kat, even when they learn that they are on their own. The reader also gets to see how far they are willing to go, to accomplish what they set out to do. Plus as a bonus, the reader gets to see some certain characters growing closer! *Wink! wink!*
Like HEIST SOCIETY, UNCOMMON CRIMINALS is a well written book by Ally Carter. The pacing was just right and there were dynamic characters. It also continued the story line of HEIST SOCIETY pretty well. However, no matter how good UNCOMMON CRIMINALS is, I still think HEIST SOCIETY was a bit better. And that is the only comparison I will make about the two books.
RATING: REALLY ICY
RECOMMENDATION: For anyone who likes the Gallagher Girl’s Series by Ally Carter and for anyone who loved reading White Cat by Holly Black.
