Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme created by The Broke and Bookish and now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.
This Week’s Prompt
This week’s topic is… “The Last Ten Books I Abandoned” so naturally I went with the last books I did not finish. I couldn’t think of ten books, so you’ll have to do with six.
As a mood reader, I’ve gotten really good at DNFing books that I’m not feeling. It’s not necessarily an indicator of what I think makes a good book; it’s mainly just my mood. Because of how picky my mood is, I rarely track my DNFs – I don’t feel like it’s a bit unfair to label a book as DNFed when it’s usually me, not the book, that’s the problem. Still, they stick with me, and thus here are the last six books I did not finish, starting from the most recent.
The List
1. On the Fence by Kasie West
I got to chapter 10 before I caved to the temptation to see how it ended, which didn’t help convince me to keep reading. Unlike the others, though, this one wasn’t a victim of my picky mood; it was more so the genre? YA contemporary is pretty hit or miss for me, and well, I DNFed this, so you know how it went for me.
2. The Right Swipe by Alisha Rai
I DNFed it so fast I didn’t even get the chance to tell Goodreads that I’ve started reading it. To be fair, I was in a reading slump at the time, but the first few chapters just couldn’t make me stick around.
3. Fix Her Up by Tessa Bailey
I enjoyed the half that I read, but I just could not get through any more of it (a running theme in this post). I ended up peaking at the ending, which really messed with my desire to borrow it again (unfortunately, another running theme).
4. The Friend Zone by Abby Jimenez
I peaked at the ending, and once I did, I just could not keep reading. I liked it up until I made that terrible decision. Once again, once I knew how it ended, any motivation to continue reading vanished.
5. The Hating Game by Sally Throne
Another DNF that I’m chalking up to my moodiness. Or maybe it was just the wrong book to read after The Unhoneymooners, which I loved. It also didn’t help that there’s so much hype around this book.
6. Courting Darkness by Robin LaFevers
I DNFed it, and it’s been haunting me ever since. I don’t usually feel guilty for DNFing books, but I loved the series it’s spun off of, His Fair Assassins. I just couldn’t get into Courting Darkness.
TL;DR
Clearly, I need to work on having more patience and not spoiling the ending for myself. In my defense, it’s no fun to read a book that feels like it’s going nowhere.
What about you? What’s the last book you DNFed?
I think it’s good that you know your limits and DNF books that don’t work for you!
My TTT .
Omg, you’re like! I peek at the ending too often and ruin it for myself! But I rarely DNF it; I just soldier through (sometimes days and days) but it just irks me to push it to DNF on my Goodreads.
